Thayer is a city in Neosho County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 432. Thayer was laid out in the fall of 1870 when the railroad was extended to that point. It was named for Nathaniel Thayer, a railroad employee. The town was built up quickly and was incorporated as a city in 1871.
