By Dietrich Knauth and Daniel Wiessner (Reuters) -Members of a federal appeals court questioned during a hearing on Tuesday what role courts should have in reviewing President Donald Trump's authority to deploy the National Guard and Marines to Los Angeles amid protests and civil unrest.

A federal appeals court on Tuesday seemed ready to keep President Donald Trump in control of California National Guard troops after they were deployed following protests in Los Angeles over immigration raids.

US District Judge Charles Breyer in San Francisco ruled last week that the Guard deployment was illegal and exceeded Trump's authority. Federal government attorney Brett Shumate argued the Guard is necessary to protect federal buildings from 'ongoing protests' and Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents making arrests.
