WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump on Thursday threatened a 200% tariff on European wine, Champagne and spirits if the European Union goes forward with a planned tariff on American whiskey. The European tariff, which was unveiled in response to steel and aluminum tariffs by the U.S. administration, was expected to go into effect on April 1.

President Donald Trump on Thursday threatened to impose a massive tariff on European alcohol in response to the European Union’s retaliation against his steel and aluminum tariffs – a tit-for-tat escalation of a trade war that could easily get out of hand.

Earlier today, Trump shared on social media that he would put a 200% tariff on European alcohol, in response to the EU's retaliatory tariffs on American whiskey. Trump has also directly touched upon Canada during his Oval Office meeting with Nato's Secretary-General.
