Gerry Philbin, a star defensive end for the New York Jets during the AFL days and a member of the 1968 Super Bowl champion team, died Wednesday at the age of 83, the team announced.

A third-round AFL Draft pick by the Jets out of the University at Buffalo in 1964, Philbin spent nine seasons with the team, including 1968, then they won their only Super Bowl, a 16-7 upset of the Colts.
