Protests in Nepal’s capital Kathmandu were initially triggered by a ban on social media, but quickly expanded to include issues of wider corruption, lack of economic opportunities and police violence against demonstrators.
KATHMANDU (Reuters) -As protesters in Nepal stormed parliament this week forcing the prime minister to quit, luxury hotels and residences were attacked by arsonists amid anger at the lavish lifestyle of the elites in one of the world's poorest countries.
Meanwhile, Nepal police said over 15,000 prisoners had escaped from two dozen jails during the protests. While 1,455 of them had been re-arrested and sent back to jail, 12,852 remained on the run, spokesperson Vinod Ghimire said. The president described Kirk as a "martyr for truth and freedom."
