A shelter-in-place order is in place near Minneapolis in the US state of Minnesota after targeted shootings overnight, local authorities say.

A prominent Minnesota Democrat and her spouse were killed, while another state lawmaker and his wife were wounded in targeted shootings, police said.

Minnesota Democrat Representative Melissa Hortman has died after being shot in her home, Governor Tim Walz said during a press conference Saturday. Hortman was the Minnesota Speaker Emerita and House DFL Caucus Leader. Her husband was also killed, Walz said.

Two people have been charged with conspiracy to commit voter registration fraud in a case that shows Minnesota's election safeguards work and prevented anyone from voting illegally, Secretary of State Steve Simon said Friday.
