There is no tsunami threat to Hawaii from a magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck off the coast of Russia this morning, Pacific Tsunami Warning Center officials said. “Based on all available data a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii,” PTWC officials said at 10:41 a.m.
Current tsunami warning systems rely on seismic data to estimate whether an undersea quake could produce a tsunami, and on deep-ocean pressure sensors to confirm if one is underway. Those sensors are considered the “gold standard,” but they are expensive and sparse.
