DETROIT – The Detroit Tigers just pulled off one of the most ridiculous plays you’ll ever see on a baseball diamond. It happened in the bottom of the fifth inning Monday, with the Tigers blasting the White Sox 8-0 at Rate Field in Chicago.

Masyn Winn led off the game with a two-strike single to center and, after Ivan Herrera followed with a walk, he scored on Alec Burleson's seeing-eye single up the middle. The Brewers defense helped quell the rally, with Jackson Chourio throwing out Herrera at third on the play, and Quintana escaped without further damage.

Tarik Skubal pitched one-run ball into the eighth inning, and Detroit Tigers beat the Chicago Cubs 3-1 in the opener of a weekend series between two of the majors' best teams.

The last time Jack Flaherty beat the Cubs, he not only batted, he singled and scored a run. That was at the end of the 2019 regular season, and it helped the Cardinals clinch a National League Central title.

They finally had gotten past reigning American League Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal, putting two runners on for Suzuki before the Tigers brought in right-hander Will Vest to face him. But the Cubs fell just short, falling 3-1 in a battle between first-place teams.
