After a long time coming, Oracle Cloud is unveiled as the database giant's entry into the market with a focus on social and custom infrastructure services.

Putting rivalries temporarily aside, the software maker pledges to work on a Microsoft Visual Studio tool that lets Windows applications access data in an Oracle database.

The database giant will join Hewlett-Packard and IBM in a European project aimed at advancing grid computing technology.
