Meta just won a major ruling in a landmark case about how copyright law and fair use applies to AI model training, the second such loss for authors this week. Just days ago, Anthropic won a fair use case as well.

The suit alleged that Meta violated the authors’ copyrights both in the AI training process and in the process of downloading and reuploading the illicit libraries. While the judge rejected the AI training claim, he was not asked to rule on the torrenting issue, so that remains unresolved.

A federal judge sided with Facebook parent Meta Platforms in dismissing a copyright infringement lawsuit from a group of authors who accused the company of stealing their works to train its artificial intelligence technology.
