Eskom has reduced load shedding to stage 4 until further notice due to the recovery of units at three power stations. This after the parastatal ramped the rolling blackout from stage 3 to stage 6 in the early hours of Sunday morning. Eskom spokesperson Daphne Mokwena said load shedding was downgraded to stage from 12:30 am on Monday.

Cape Town - Eskom’s recent announcement of stage 6 load shedding has raised alarm among political and economic analysts who view it as a significant setback for the country’s economy, while the City of Cape Town said it could not guarantee protection of up to two stages of load shedding for its customers if Sunday’s trend persists.

While addressing the media in Pretoria on Sunday, Eskom CEO Dan Marokane stated that recovery plans were well underway, with numerous units already back on the grid.

South Africa got some slight relief on Monday after Eskom announced the end of stage 6 load shedding, lowering the level to stage 4.

Eskom has downgraded load shedding to Stage 4 until further notice. The utility says it has managed to return eight out of 10 generation units to service. "This follows the successful recovery of all five units at Majuba, two units at Camden, and one unit at Medupi since Saturday," said spokesperson Daphne Mokwena.

After a lull of a almost three weeks, load shedding has once again made an unwelcome return – and on a Saturday evening, when demand is typically lower than average.

Power utility Eskom says that load shedding will be reduced to stage 4 from 00h30 on Monday (24 February) following the successful return of most downed units. Eskom was forced to implement stage 3 load shedding on Saturday after five units tripped at Majuba and one unit tripped at Medupi.
