Firefighters extinguished hotspots and reinforced control lines on the south, east and mauka flanks of the fire on June 17. The fire is 95% as of 7 p.m. The fire was contained to 93% as of 7 p.m. on June 16 and officials lifted evacuation orders as well due to the increased fire containment.
Nearly two years after a wind-whipped wildfire on the Hawaiian island of Maui destroyed whole neighborhoods in Lahiana, dump trunks began moving about 400,000 tons of debris to the final disposal site this week.
The Maui Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) issued evacuation orders for homes near Mile Markers 24 and 25, with approximately 105 Kahikinui homestead lots in the area. Door-to-door evacuations were also conducted by Maui Police Department and MFD, according to an official update.
