Anyone in Los Angeles with the Waymo One app can now request a driverless ride within an 80-square-mile area of the city.

Bay Area-based autonomous driving technology company Waymo is about to become a whole lot more prevalent around Los Angeles. Starting today, Waymo has moved out of its Southern California beta-testing phase,

Alphabet's Waymo said on Tuesday its autonomous ride-hailing service, Waymo One, is now available to everyone in Los Angeles, a sign of rapid growth and adoption of the technology.

Of course, Waymo is now in direct competition with human-powered transportation services like Uber and Lyft, both of which operate without any pesky geographic restrictions. Those services are often cheaper than Waymo’s vehicles, and customers can expect shorter wait times for rides.

Waymo One, the driverless ride-hailing app, is now fully available to much of greater Los Angeles after the robotaxi service previously started offering rides in LA to a limited number of people on a waiting list.

The expansion comes eight months after Waymo began offering rides in Los Angeles to a limited group of passengers chosen from a waiting list that had ballooned to more than 300,000 people.

While anyone in Los Angeles can book a trip with Waymo there are limitations such as it doesn't provide a ride to airports or trips on the highway.
