There is no tsunami threat to Hawaii from a magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck off the coast of Russia this morning, Pacific Tsunami Warning Center officials said. “Based on all available data a destructive Pacific-wide tsunami is not expected and there is no tsunami threat to Hawaii,” PTWC officials said at 10:41 a.m.
According to the Alaska Earthquake Center, the Aleutian megathrust is the primary cause of the strongest earthquakes in the region. The Aleutian megathrust is a major subduction zone fault, an area where two tectonic plates meet.
