Population Estimate. The current estimated population size is 68 (37 F, 28 M, 3 U). Sixteen of these 68 individuals are wild-hatched, and the rest are captive-reared. To the best of our knowledge, as of 1 September, there are at least 55 in Wisconsin and one in Minnesota. The remaining birds’ locations have not been confirmed in the last month.

Whooping Crane - International Crane Foundation
The last naturally occurring Whooping Crane population migrates over 2,500 miles from their breeding grounds in western Canada to winter on the coastal wetlands in southeastern Texas. The survival of this critical population depends on securing freshwater from the Guadalupe River basin and conserving wetland habitats along the Texas Gulf Coast.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service estimated the abundance of whooping cranes in the Aransas-Wood Buffalo population for the winter of 2022–2023. Survey results indicated 536 whooping cranes (95% CI = 443.5–644.1; CV = 0.146) inhabited the primary survey area (Figure 1).

Aerial surveys of the Aransas-Wood Buffalo whooping crane population conducted in January 2023 indicated 536 whooping cranes, including 88 juveniles, in the primary survey area (approximately 160,125 acres) centered on Aransas National Wildlife Refuge.
In 2023, there are approximately 506 Whooping Cranes in the wild migratory flock that breed in Wood Buffalo National Park in Canada and winter at Aransas National Wildlife Refuge in Texas. An additional 296 birds are in captivity or part of reintroduction efforts in eastern North America.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service estimated the abundance of whooping cranes in the Aransas-Wood Buffalo population for the winter of 2021–2022. Survey results indicated 543 whooping cranes (95% CI = 426.5–781.8; CV = 0.182) inhabited the primary survey area (Figure 1).
