😴Two-toed sloth Athena takes #NatZooZen to a whole new level! This serial chiller 💤 sleeps 15-20 hours a day, but not because she's lazy! Sloths sleep to conserve the energy they get from their primary diet: leaves.🍃 While foliage does not provide a ton of nutrients, sloths' very slow metabolism allows them to function on less. #BringtheZootoYou #ClosedButStillCaring #SlothLife SLOTH FACTS: https://s.si.edu/3gvYwtJ | Smithsonian’s National Zoo and Conservation Biology Institute

Hang in there. Slow down for a moment of #NatZooZen with two-toed #sloth Athena 🦥 🥰 and her kale. 🥬 Two-toed sloths are native to Central and South America and live in the canopies of tropical rainforests. Two-toed sloths are very slow moving and have a metabolic rate of about 40% to 45% of what would be expected for their body weight. Their body temperatures range between 86 to 93 degrees Fahrenheit, which helps them conserve energy. Thank you for your continued support. For more information

Although you may have heard sloths be called two-toed and three-toed sloths however this is actually not anatomically correct. As both sloths possess three ‘toes’ on their hind limbs and the difference actually lies in their ‘fingers’. Therefore three-fingered and two-fingered is more analogically correct. There are now many scientific publications that recognise this as the correct terminology for these animals. 🦥 | The Sloth Conservation Foundation

We could stare at this basket all day. 😍 Correction: This video should be attributed to Sloth Relief & Shelters. These baby sloths have been rescued by the @JaguarRescueCenter in Costa Rica. According to the Jaguar Rescue Center, many of the young two-toed sloths rescued there have fallen off their mother due to accident, illness or rejection. When efforts to reunite them with their mother failed, they were brought to the Jaguar Rescue Center. They will be raised and cared for until they are ol

It’s time for a dip! The pygmy three-toed sloth is the slowest moving land mammal in the world. They move around two metres per minute! However, when swimming, they’re capable of moving around three times faster. Their diet of leaves generates large amounts of gas in the sloth’s stomach, helping to keep them buoyant. | BBC Earth

Oh to be a sloth enjoying a carrot... 🦥🥕 All species of #sloth are folivores, or an animal that specializes in eating leaves, but two-toed sloths have a more varied diet that includes fruits and small amounts of animal protein. Here at the Aquarium, our Linnaeus's Two-Toed Sloth, Takoda, mainly eats veggies and occasionally eggs as part of his main diet. #aquarium #utah #sloths #eating #carrots #animals | The Living Planet Aquarium

We find we are very often asked about the differnce between calling sloths - two-toed and three-toed VS Two-fingered and Three-fingered. Referring to their fingers makes much more sense anatomically. We believe that the use of ‘toes’ came from the translation from Spanish to English. • • • • #Wildlife #Sloths #SlothFacts #SlothLife #AnimalFacts #SlothLover | The Sloth Conservation Foundation
