Abner Doubleday served in the United States Army for more than 30 years. He graduated from the military academy in 1842 and retired in 1873. His service includes time at Fort Sumter, command in Virginia, and the Battle of Gettysburg. When his corps commander, Maj. Gen. John F. Reynolds, was killed on the morning of July 1, 1863, Doubleday took the lead.
