Mount Rainier is the tallest peak in Washington state and an active volcano. It was traditionally known as. Taquoma, or “mother of the waters” and is the origin of where the city of Tacoma took its name. The mountain was renamed on May 8, 1792 by Captain, George Vancouver, in honor of his friend, Rear Admiral Peter Rainier.
