Seborrheic dermatitis is a common, chronic form of eczema/dermatitis that mainly affects the sebaceous, gland-rich regions of the scalp and face. There are two common forms, the infantile variant, which is commonly referred to as “cradle cap” and the adult form, which commonly presents as scaly flakes and patches involving the scalp, creases of the nose, eyebrows, armpits and groin. Seborrheic dermatitis (face dandruff) is caused by a yeast and can be confused with eczema or dry skin. It appears as greasy or flaky skin on or around the eyebrows, nose & ears. The best treatments at home or over-the-counter are washing the areas with ketoconazole (Nizoral) or a zinc pyrithione shampoo like Head & Shoulders.
