In 1982, during the Falklands War, the Royal Navy destroyer HMS Sheffield (D80) became the first Royal Navy ship lost in combat since World War II. Sheffield anti-ship missiles were hit by an Argentine Exocet missile, causing a massive fire and extensive structural damage.
