Posted for educational purposes. A post-mortem of a deaths head hawk moth (Acherontia atropos) that failed to emerge from its pupa. Insects have a very high failure rate in nature, and while captive breeding does improve their odds of survival considerably, many still do not make it. These caterpillars eat ALOT! Be prepared to go through full bushes of privet 😂 I have to give them fresh food on a night and it’s gone by the morning. It’s worth it though. The pupa will take around 1-2 months to hatch depending on temperature 🎉 | Jumping spider & Moth life

Explaining Insects 🦋 on Instagram: "The moth pupa is the hidden transformation stage in a moth’s life cycle, where the caterpillar becomes an adult. Inside this hardened, often brown casing, the insect appears still, but internally its body is being completely rebuilt. Tissues from the caterpillar break down and reorganize to form wings, legs, antennae, and reproductive organs. During this stage, the pupa does not feed and relies entirely on energy stored from its caterpillar phase. Many
