The board game known as Monopoly was created in 1903 by a woman named Elizabeth Magie to warn against the dangers of capitalism. She invented the Landlords Game as a learning tool to show the social risks of land monopolies and wealth concentration. Magie offered two rule sets, one where players crush opponents by acquiring property and one called Prosperity in which wealth is shared.
