The first mechanical clocks, invented around 1300 AD, were so inaccurate they could lose or gain hours every single day. These weren't the clocks we know today. They were massive iron mechanisms built into towers, without any faces or hands. Their only job was to strike a bell on the hour. This was mainly for monasteries to call monks to prayer and for towns to regulate workdays. 🕰️ They worked using a system called a verge and foliot escapement, where a falling weight turned a series of gears.
